On the occasion of World No Tobacco day, 31st May 2019 a mass media campaign was organised in Saket Delhi at Select city walk Mall. MLA South Delhi Mr Saurabh Bhardwaj was the Chief Guest & Dr S K Arora, Addl Director Health,Govt of Delhi was the Guest of Honour. The other Dignitaries present were Mr Shaleen, OSD to Hon’ble Minister of Health, Sh.Satyender Jain, Dr Jiloha from Hamdard Medical College , Dr Monga, Mr Anmol & Mr Kamlesh & Volunteers of Rotary club & Tobacco NGO Organization.
The Prog started with welcome of Guest followed by flagging off Rally of Autos having display banner with ill effects of Tobaccos.
Dr SK Arora explained about the various ill effects of tobaccos & need for protecting youth from this menace. This year the slogan was Tobacco & it’s hazardous effects on lungs. Dr Arora said that tobacco use give rise to lung cancers, Chronic respiratory diseases, asthma & Tuberculosis like infections. Smokers are at risk of developing TB twice as compared to nonsmokers. TB treatment may fail if smoking is not stopped. He also explained the emerging threats in the name of e- Cigarette, Hookah smoking and Advertising of Tobaccos directly or in the name of Pan Masala & other eatables. He informed the gathering of around 250 people that e Cigarette & Hookah smoking may expose the people to much more hazards in some circumstances as compared to traditional Cigarettes. Nicotine inhaled through one cartridge of e Cigarette is usually equivalent to that of one packet of traditional Cigarettes. One session of Hookah smoking of half to one hour is equivalent to inhaling smoke of 100 Cigarettes.Pan Masala in view of Supari is also cancerous & should be avoided.
MLA Mr Bhardwaj helped the gathering to take anti Tobacco oath & also to help Tobacco/ Pan Masala users to quit these habits. He Motivated gathering for not to use these dangerous products and told users to avail the facilities of counselling centres at the event site. 1 for 1 Campaign to adopt one Tobacco users to help him/ her to quit was also highlighted.
OSD to Minister Mr Shaleen also Motivated children to act emotionally so that their parents if are using Tobacco should quit it.
Later a quiz programme on Tobacco control was conducted by Dr S K Arora in which everyone especially Children participated very actively & large no of prices were distributed to the winners to further strengthen the Awareness on Tobacco control issues. All the issues related to ill effects & Tobacco control laws were again disseminated through Quiz programme by Dr Arora very nicely.
